The ceremonial festival of the indigenous Itelmen people was revived 23 years ago in Kovran
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY. September 27. VOSTOK-MEDIA - "No Spectators - Only Participants" is the motto of the 2010 Alkhalalalai Itelmen aboriginal festival, which was held at the Pimchakh Itelmen Community Center, Kamchatka, on September 25-26.
The festival gathered about a thousand people, who adopted the motto and participated in the contest for the funniest story about the aboriginals, grimacing contest, fish gutting competition, traditional Itelmen food cook-off and other events.
The day-long dancing marathon was the highlight of the Itelmen aboriginal festival. Only four out of the twelve pairs of participants crossed the finishing line. The winners in the event managed to dance over 16 hours, breaking the previous record of 15 hours and 31 minutes. They received a special prize from Kamchatka Governor.
The ceremonial festival of the indigenous Itelmen people was held with the help of the Kamchatka government. Pimchakh Itelmen Community Center is being constructed as part of the long-term governmental initiative "2012 sustainable development of indigenous small numbered peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East"
In the past three years Alkhalalalai was held at the Pimchakh camping ground. The ceremonial festival was revived 23 years ago in Kovran village, Kamchatka.
