Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov, will make an official visit to the People’s Republic of China to discuss the final handover of the Amur islands

VLADIVOSTOK. 21 July. VOSTOK-MEDIA. Official Representative of the Foreign Affairs Office of the PRC, Lyu Dzyanchao, informed that the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Lavrov, will make an official visit to China for discussing the question of the final handover of several Amur islands, Tarabarov and a half of Big Ussuriskiy Island, on July, 21-22. Demarcation work has been already finished on the islands and they will most probably be handed over to China in August, 2008, informs the RIA “Novosti”.
A preliminary agreement about “volunteer” handover of these islands to China was signed in October, 2004. Before that date, starting in 1991 these islands were considered as a disputable territory. The total area of which is about 13.000 ha. In comparison, the territory of Moscow is much bigger.
