July, 11 – 100 years ago the first tramway line was laid down in Vladivostok

VLADIVOSTOK. 11 July. VOSTOK-MEDIA. 100 years ago the first tramway line was laid down in Vladivostok. Service was held at the Cathedral Square. The city head dropped a palm of coins into a hole dug out on the Svetlanskaya Street. Then it was covered with a copper foundation panel and a ground lay. The first tramway Lugovaya Str. - Railroad Station went on its way in 1912.
On July, 11, 1849, Gennadiy Ivanovich Nevelskoy leading a group of explorers came to an outfall of Amur, where not a single European had ever been. Shallows and streamflows prevented the vessel “Baikal” from navigation. Then Nevelskoy decided to explore the area on boats. Having measured the depth, he assured that river was appropriate for heavy vessels navigation either. Exploring Priamurye, Nevelskoy founded the Nikolaevsky military post (nowadays, Nikolaevsk-on-Amur city), a base for further explorations of the Nevelskoy’s group. Earlier relying on results of previous unsuccessful expeditions the Emperor ordered: “Amur river is useless and must be forgotten”. Alas, the Emperor was wrong.
July, 11, 1860. Leiutenant Colonel of Navigation Officer Corps Vasiliy Babkin, after visiting one of the Vladivostok bays on his schooner “Vostok” wrote in the ship’s journal: “Navigating from the Valentin Bay along the shore at midday we approached an unknown bay…was explored on the Day of Christ Transfiguration. Hereby, I called it the Transfiguration Bay. And this is its name on map”. This Bay is very comfortable for landing ships and vessels and at the distance of 109 sea miles from Vladivostok. Vasiliy Matveevich Babkin was the first sailor who discovered the Bay.
July, 11, 1924. The battle boat “Krasniy Oktyabr” left Vladivostok heading for the Vrangel Island with a special hydrographic expedition headed by famous hydrographer and geodesist Davidov on its board.
July, 11, 1938. Major architecture and planning committee of People’s Commissariat of Communal Services (RSFCR) the first general plan of Vladivostok, designed by an architect Eugeniy Alexandrovich Vasiliev, was expertized. In his work he first time ever used a zoning principal. Plan was designed for 15 years and considered about 500 000 citizens.
July, 11, 1964. Meeting symbolizing the 40th anniversary of Lenin Komsomol was held at the Railroad Station Square. Young Communists walled up a letter to Komsomol of 1984 into a pedestal of a Lenin sculpture. Time goes quickly. Komsomol is not alive any more. Hopefully, there will be something to read in 2064.
July, 11, 1999. 9 years ago, on July, 11-17 on Magadan the first theatrical festival “Castral Footlights” with participation of the GULAG thetres: Norilsk transpolar drama theatre and Sakhalin international theatrical centre named after A.P. Chehov took place.
1980 – 118 years ago the first political elections were held in Japan.
1921 – A people’s authority set up in Mongolia after glorious victory of the Mongolian people’s Army along with the Red Army over Chinese occupants and the White Army. On that day a popular government formed a day before, was festively established in Urga.
